Can the Pope change the Lord's Prayer?

Over the last few months we have heard and seen reports of Pope Francis saying he wants to modify the translation of the Lord's Prayer.

This is being rolled out in the latest Italian translation of the Mass, it seems.

Much of all this rather unnecessary controversy comes from, of course, the fact that we are using translations of the once definitive Latin text for the Mass, derived from the Greek.

The oldest surviving text of the Lord's Prayer is the Greek text (from which the Latin, then other languages were translated, although it is believed that an Aramaic version pre-existed the Greek) uses the word εἰσενέγκῃς which does literally mean "lead us" or "make us enter". The Pope should not and cannot (in reality) change the meaning of the prayer Christ has given his disciples. Lead us not into temptation is what the oldest text we have says. Think about how God was willing to allow Job to be tempted in the Old Testament: Christ's prayer given to his apostles and disciples and transmitted to us reflects this and our sincere desire that God, in his supreme, all-encompassing will, may spare us from exactly that.

The Latin:
Pater noster qui es in caelis
sanctificetur nomen tuum
adveniat regnum tuum
fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelo et in terra
Panem nostrum cotidianum[18] da nobis hodie
et dimitte nobis debita nostra
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris
et ne nos inducas in tentationem
sed libera nos a malo.

The English:
Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Michael's Letter

I was very moved reading this letter, reprinted in The Catholic Illustrated. I reproduce the actual text of the letter (which is available also at http://www.latinmass-ctm.org/archives/tallestmarine/thetallestofallmarines.html) for readers of this blog. Fr Muldy, Chaplain to the US Navy, spoke to 5000 marines in California in 1951, reading this letter from 1950 from a marine involved in the Korean War, and confirming that the letter and what it recounts was true.

Dear Mom,
I wouldn't dare write this letter to anyone but you because no one else would believe it. Maybe even you will find it hard but I have got to tell somebody.
First off, I am in a hospital. Now don't worry, ya hear me, don't worry. I was wounded but I'm okay you understand. Okay. The doctor says that I will be up and around in a month.
But thats not what I want to tell you.
Remember when I joined the Marines last year; remember when I left, how you told me to say a prayer to St. Michael everyday. You really didn't have to tell me that. Ever since I can remember you always told me to pray to St. Michael the Archangel. You even named me after him. Well I always have.
When I got to Korea, I prayed even harder.
Remember the prayer that you taught me?
"Michael, Michael of the morning fresh crop of Heaven adorning," you know the rest of it. Well I said it everyday. Sometimes when I was marching or sometimes resting. But always before I went to sleep. I even got some of the other fellas to say it.
Well, one day I was with an advance detail way up over the front lines. We were scouting for the Commies. I was plodding along in the bitter cold, my breath was like cigar smoke.
I thought I knew every guy in the patrol, when along side of me comes another Marine I never met before. He was bigger than any other Marine I'd ever seen. He must have been 6'4" and built in proportion. It gave me a feeling of security to have such a body near.
Anyway, there we were trudging along. The rest of the patrol spread out. Just to start conversation I said, "Cold ain't it." And then I laughed. Here I was with a good chance of getting killed any minute and I am talking about the weather.
My companion seemed to understand. I heard him laugh softly.
I looked at him, "I have never seen you before, I thought I knew every man in the outfit."
"I just joined at the last minute", he replied. "The name is Michael."
"Is that so," I said surprised. "That is my name too."
"I know," he said and then went on, "Michael, Michael of the morning ..."
I was too amazed to say anything for a minute. How did he know my name, and a prayer that you had taught me? Then I smiled to myself, every guy in the outfit knew about me. Hadn't I taught the prayer to anybody who would listen. Why now and then, they even referred to me as St. Michael.
Neither of us spoke for a time and then he broke the silence.
"We are going to have some trouble up ahead."
He must have been in fine physical shape or he was breathing so lightly I couldn't see his breath. Mine poured out in great clouds. There was no smile on his face now. Trouble ahead, I thought to myself, well with the Commies all around us, that is no great revelation.
Snow began to fall in great thick globs. In a brief moment the whole countryside was blotted out. And I was marching in a white fog of sticky particles. My companion disappeared.
"Michael," I shouted in sudden alarm.
I felt his hand on my arm, his voice was rich and strong, "This will stop shortly."
His prophecy proved to be correct. In a few minutes the snow stopped as abruptly as it had begun. The sun was a hard shining disc.
I looked back for the rest of the patrol, there was no one in sight. We lost them in that heavy fall of snow. I looked ahead as we came over a little rise.
Mom, my heart stopped. There were seven of them. Seven Commies in their padded pants and jackets and their funny hats. Only there wasn't anything funny about them now. Seven rifles were aimed at us.
"Down Michael," I screamed and hit the frozen earth.
I heard those rifles fire almost as one. I heard the bullets. There was Michael still standing.
Mom, those guys couldn't have missed, not at that range. I expected to see him literally blown to bits.
But there he stood, making no effort to fire himself. He was paralyzed with fear. It happens sometimes, Mom, even to the bravest. He was like a bird fascinated by a snake.
At least, that was what I thought then. I jumped up to pull him down and that was when I got mine I felt a sudden flame in my chest. I often wondered what it felt like to be hit, now I know..
I remember feeling strong arms around me, arms that laid me ever so gently on a pillow of snow. I opened my eyes, for one last look. I was dying. Maybe I was even dead, I remember thinking well, this is not so bad.
Maybe I was looking into the sun. Maybe I was in shock. But it seemed I saw Michael standing erect again only this time his face was shining with a terrible splendor.
As I say, maybe it was the sun in my eyes, but he seemed to change as I watched him. He grew bigger, his arms stretched out wide, maybe it was the snow falling again, but there was a brightness around him like the wings of an angel. In his hands was a sword. A sword that flashed with a million lights.
Well, that is the last thing I remember until the rest of the fellas came up and found me. I do not know how much time had passed. Now and then I had but a moment's rest from the pain and fever. I remember telling them of the enemy just ahead.
"Where is Michael," I asked.
I saw them look at one another. "Where's who?" asked one.
"Michael, Michael the big Marine I was walking with just before the snow squall hit us."
"Kid," said the sergeant, "You weren't walking with anyone. I had my eyes on you the whole time. You were getting too far out. I was just going to call you in when you disappeared in the snow."
He looked at me, curiously. "How did you do it kid?"
"How'd I do what?" I asked half angry despite my wound. "This marine named Michael and I were just ..."
"Son," said the sergeant kindly, " I picked out this outfit myself and there just ain't another Michael in it. You are the only Mike in it."
He paused for a minute, "Just how did you do it kid? We heard shots. There hasn't been a shot fired from your rifle. And there isn't a bit of lead in them seven bodies over the hill there."
I didn't say anything, what could I say. I could only look open-mouthed with amazement. It was then the sergeant spoke again, "Kid," he said gently, "everyone of those seven Commies was killed by a sword stroke."
That is all I can tell you Mom. As I say, it may have been the sun in my eyes, it may have been the cold or the pain. But that is what happened.
Love,
Your son,
Michael

The Prayer:
Michael, Michael of the morning,
Fresh chord of heaven adorning,
Keep me safe today
And in time of temptation,
Drive the devil away.

Monday 2 June 2014

I was edified yesterday by the visit of two young Frenchmen to our Sunday Mass. As the church is undergoing redecoration, I said Mass in the hall, as I have had to be doing for the past month. They  were on holiday here, walking and camping, but called the day before to check when Sunday Mass would be and then were waiting outside in plenty of time. When it came to Holy Communion, both knelt and reverently received the Sacred Host on their tongues. They were the only ones out of the congregation of about two hundred who received thus, and a shining example to everyone.
At the second Mass I celebrated a visiting German received the Host in his hand and walked off with it so that I had to intercept him as he headed towards an extraordinary minister with the chalice and ask him to consume it. His response was to ask if "the wine" were forbidden. My German is not up to explaining on the hoof the difference between wine and the Precious Blood, let alone the reasons for not allowing intinction, so I simply said, that, yes, it is forbidden! [meaning, in these circumstances with you walking off with the Sacred Host]. There is, of course, no judgement implied on the nationalities of the people referred to here, merely about the understanding of whom we are receiving in Holy Communion.
Bishop Athanasius Schneider gave an inspiring talk recently to members of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy at St Patrick's, Soho, London: much of what he said relates to the acknowledgement of the Real Presence through the manner in which we receive Holy Communion. These two incidents particularly highlighted his comments. I heartily recommend his latest book: Corpus Christi, published in English by Lumen Fidei Press, ISBN 978-1-78280-201-3.

Requiescat in pace

A personal post, that my dear Aunt - Vera - has died, aged 89. She was a faithful Anglican all her life, slightly mystified by my conversion to Catholicism back in the late '90s, but, true to her nature, understanding, supportive and generous.
(Vera at my Ordination, 2010 - her hand on my chasuble)

Her life spanned an incredible period - from 1924 to 2013 - she experienced the Depression of the '30s as a child and then, as a young woman, the horror of the Second World War; she trained as a shorthand typist and joined a local Estate Agent as a secretary and became a partner and then, eventually, sole owner.
Vera was an incredible woman, very independent, always active and enthusiastic. She never married, but in addition to her Christian faith and her "vocation" as an Estate Agent (- strange as it may seem, recently people have been revealing to me how generous Vera was in loaning them her personal money on trust so that they could complete their move! [I wonder how many other Estate Agents would ever consider this?] -) she was also a great amateur actress, being involved in many clubs, including the Ingoldsby Club, the St Oswald's and Streatham Players, the Magdalene Players and others; a further element in Vera's life was having a dog as a companion - a whole series of them ensued over the years after the adoption of her first Jack Russell who was named Scamp: then came Sam, Pickles and ultimately, Benny.
In her latter years she maintained her independence as much as she could. Back in 2004, aged 80, she came and visited me in Rome whilst I was in my first year in seminary - she always said she would never forget the taxi ride from the airport to the Centro Storico (I was there, and she was quite right - it certainly was a white-knuckle ride and one I shall never forget either!); she finally retired officially from actively running her Estate Agency just a few years ago - amazing - and has still carried on with what she called "just a few rentals" and what had become a "new project", her memoirs which she hoped to get published before she died.
Above all, Vera lived and loved - she lived her life in a loving way and she loved life. May all of her huge charity and generosity over her long life bear much fruit, and may her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Pro Eligendo Summo Pontifice

I am very pleased to say that I have received permission from my Ordinary to celebrate a Votive Mass (II Class) Pro Eligendo Summo Pontifice  - for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff. The Mass will be celebrated in our Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the commemoration of St Gregory and the Feria (III day of the IV week in Lent) will be observed (as required) tomorrow, Tuesday 12th March, 7pm.
The Mass text is as follows:

PRO ELIGENDO SUMMO PONTIFICE

Introitum (1 Reg. 2, 35)

Oremus.

Tractus (Ps. 131, 8-10)

Surge, Domine, in requiem tuam: tu et area sanctificationis tuae. V. Sacerdotes tui induantur iustitiam, et sancti tui exsultent. V. Propter David servum tuum, non avertas faciem Christi tui.

Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Ioannem. (Io. 14, 15-21)

In illo tempore: Dixit Iesus discipulis suis: Si diligitis me, mandata mea servate.

Offertorium (3 Esdrae 5, 40)

Introit     I Kings 2.35

I will raise me up a faithful priest, who shall do according to My heart, and My soul, and I will build him a faithful house, and he shall walk all days before My anointed. Glory be… I will…

Collects
Let us pray. We most humbly entreat Thee, O Lord, that Thy boundless goodness may grant as pontiff to the most Holy Roman Church one who shall ever be both pleasing to Thee, by his loving zeal in our regard, and by his beneficient rule, deeply revered by Thy people to the glory of Thy name. Through our Lord…

Let us pray. O God, who hast bestowed upon the soul of thy servant Gregory the rewards of everlasting happiness: grant in thy mercy that we, who are weighed down by the burden of our sins, may be raised up by his intercession with Thee.

We beseech Thee, O Lord, that the fasts of this holy observance may procure for us an increase of piety and the continual help of Thy mercy. Through our Lord…

Lesson Heb.4:16-5:7
(Brothers:) Let us go therefore with confidence to the throne of grace: that we may obtain mercy and find grace in seasonable aid. For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins: Who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err: because himself also is compassed with infirmity. And therefore he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. Neither doth any man take the honour to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was. So Christ also did not glorify himself, that he might be made a high priest: but he that said unto him: Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech. Who in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death, was heard for his reverence.

Gradual  Leviticus 21.10
The high priest, the priest great among his brethren, upon whose head the oil of unction hath been poured, and whose hands have been consecrated for the priesthood, and who have been vested with the holy vestments: it behooved him in all things to be made like to his brethren.  That he might become a merciful and faithful high priest with God.

Tract   Ps 131.8-10
Arise, O Lord, into Thy resting-place; Thou and the ark which Thou hast sanctified.  Let Thy priests be clothed with justice, and let Thy saints rejoice.  For Thy servant David’s sake turn not away the face of Thy anointed.

Gospel Jn.14:15-21
(At that time: Jesus saith to his disciples:) If you love me, keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father: and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever: The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him. But you shall know him; because he shall abide with you and shall be in you. I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live. In that day you shall know that I am in my Father: and you in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.

Offertory   3 Esdras 5.40
They shall not partake of holy things, until a high priest shall arise for evidence and truth.

Secrets
O God, eternal shepherd, who govern Thy flock with unfailing care, grant in Thy boundless fatherly love a pastor for Thy Church who will please Thee by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord…

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord, that through the intercession of blessed Gregory, this sacrifice may profit unto us, by the offering of which thou didst vouchsafe to forgive the sins of the whole world.

May this victim, we beseech Thee, o Lord, cleanse away our sins : and sanctify the bodies and minds of Thy servants, that we may offer worthily this sacrifice. Through our Lord…

Communion   Exodus 29.29-30
The high priest who shall be anointed shall wear the holy vesture, and shall enter into the tabernacle of the testimony, to minister in the sanctuary.

Postcommunion
Let us pray. As Thou hast refreshed us, O Lord, with partaking of Thy precious Body and Blood, may the wondrous grace of Thy majesty gladden us with the gift of a Supreme Pontiff, that he might instruct Thy people by his virtues and pour forth a fragrant spiritual balm upon the minds of the faithful; who livest and reignest…

Let us pray. O God, Who didst make the blessed Pontiff Gregory rank in merit with Thy Saints: mercifully grant that we who celebrate this festival in his memory, may also follow the example of his life.

May the reception of this sacrament, O Lord, cleanse us from sin and lead us to the heavenly kingdom. Through our Lord…

Novena of prayer

A Novena of Prayer for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff

In the name + of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Veni, Creator Spiritus,
mentes tuorum visita:
imple superna gratia,
quae tu creasti pectora.

Qui diceris Paraclitus,
Altissimi donum Dei,
fons vivus, ignis, charitas,
et spiritalis unctio.

Tu septiformis munere,
digitus paternae dexterae,
tu rite promissum Patris,
sermone ditans guttura.

Accende lumen sensibus,
infunde amorem cordibus,
infirma nostri corporis
virtute firmans perpeti.

Hostem repellas longius,
pacemque dones protinus:
ductore sic te praevio
vitemos omne noxium.

Per te sciamus da Patrem,
noscamus atque Filium,
teque utriusque Spiritum
credamus omni tempore.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
et Filio, qui a mortuis
surrexit, ac Paraclito,
in saeculorum saecula. Amen.
Come, Holy Spirit, Creator come,
From your bright heavenly throne!
Come, take possession of our souls,
And make them all your own.

You who are called the Paraclete,
Best gift of God above,
The living spring, the living fire,
Sweet unction, and true love!

You who are sevenfold in your grace,
Finger of God’s right hand,
His promise, teaching little ones
To speak and understand!

O guide our minds with your blessed light,
With love our hearts inflame,
And with your strength which never decays
Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our hellish foe
True peace unto us bring,
And through all perils guide us safe
Beneath your sacred wing.

Through you may we the Father know,
Through you the eternal Son
And you the Spirit of them both
Thrice-blessed three in one.

All glory to the Father be,
And to the risen Son;
The same to you, O Paraclete,
While endless ages run. Amen.

V.        Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
R.        And kindle in them the fire of your love.
V.        Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
R.        And you will renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray
O God, who have taught the hearts of the faithful
by the light of the Holy Spirit,
grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise
and ever rejoice in his consolation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, you who have established your Church on the solid foundation of the Apostle Peter and have promised to remain with us until the end of time, grant we beseech you that we may all be steadfast in faith and filled with zeal for the glory of your Name. We humbly ask that you grant to the College of Cardinals the Spirit of Truth that they may know your will, and acting in courage and faith, may elect as Supreme Pontiff him whom you have chosen to be Chief Shepherd of your flock, Successor of Peter, Bishop of Rome, and Servant of the Servants of God. Grant to us a Pope who will teach and guide by word and example so that together with the flock entrusted to his care he may arrive at eternal life in your Kingdom where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

Hail Mary (x3)

Prayer to St Michael
Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all the wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus: have mercy on us. (x3)
Immaculate heart of Mary: pray for us.
St Peter and St Paul: Pray for us.

In the name + of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
