Can the Pope change the Lord's Prayer?
Over the last few months we have heard and seen reports of Pope Francis saying he wants to modify the translation of the Lord's Prayer.
This is being rolled out in the latest Italian translation of the Mass, it seems.
Much of all this rather unnecessary controversy comes from, of course, the fact that we are using translations of the once definitive Latin text for the Mass, derived from the Greek.
The oldest surviving text of the Lord's Prayer is the Greek text (from which the Latin, then other languages were translated, although it is believed that an Aramaic version pre-existed the Greek) uses the word εἰσενέγκῃς which does literally mean "lead us" or "make us enter". The Pope should not and cannot (in reality) change the meaning of the prayer Christ has given his disciples. Lead us not into temptation is what the oldest text we have says. Think about how God was willing to allow Job to be tempted in the Old Testament: Christ's prayer given to his apostles and disciples and transmitted to us reflects this and our sincere desire that God, in his supreme, all-encompassing will, may spare us from exactly that.
The Latin:
Pater noster qui es in caelis
sanctificetur nomen tuum
adveniat regnum tuum
fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelo et in terra
Panem nostrum cotidianum[18] da nobis hodie
et dimitte nobis debita nostra
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris
et ne nos inducas in tentationem
sed libera nos a malo.
The English:
Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
